Modern concrete starts to crumble in 50 years or less. The Roman concrete used a white powder called slaked line, as well as small particles and rock fragments known as Tefra. Scientists once believed that the concrete was stronger because of a specific chemical reaction between the Tefra and the seawater. But new research says that is not the full story.
