I think you find the same pattern all over the world, because you've got lots of peoples with insecure borders being jostled by other peoples. When we're considering this, we do need to remember just how unstable most of the world was in the past. What struck me when I read this history is there was a certain bait and switch that went on. The colonized people understood the Europeans as arriving to set up ports, to set up trading posts,. And then they were horrified when the European presence metastasized.
