Pythagoras was a sixth century b c philosopher and religious figur. He promulgated the idea that the soul does not die, but translates itself into other humans and animals after the death of the body. In ancient greece, this is also associated with other cults and mystery religions. This feeds into christian ideas about the soul and the body being being separable. So that guesses the immortal soul, doesn't it?
