The French army of 1793 performed very unevenly. Large royalist cells were active within several units. The Army was perpetually on the brink of mutiny. Napoleon must have instantly realized that simply getting the Army to a basic standard of combat readiness would be a huge task. Most of the troops were seasoned veterans.
