Homer might have got a vision of humanity that we could learn from, says Nigel Boulden. A figure like Jean-Paul Sarthe in the middle of the 20th century pulled out in a pretty clear form exactly how demanding this was for human beings to be at their best. But Homer doesn't have any of that - he's got a very different conception of what human beings could be at theirbest.
