The Foundations of Mathematics
Frege took the notion of a function from mathematics and generalized it. This led to a great deal of power, general interest in functions. The basic idea is that you have an effective positive test for logical truth. And it's incoded in a function which, when you give it any argument and say, is this a proof? Does this the truth of this? Guarantee the proof of that? If it does, guarantee the truth of that?"
