A Brief History of Cincinnatis

In four 58, the aquians had been causing rome troub and one of the consuls for the year was sent with an army to deal with them. The legions found themselves pinned down, unable to retreat and facing annihilation. Without dissent, a dictator was called for, and cincinnatus was named. He promptly raised an army an marched to the rescue of the besieged legion. It would not be long before he was called back to service in his most famous role, dictator of Rome.
