The Importance of a Cell Count With Differential for Characterizing Ascites
Spontaneous bacterial peritoneitis or SVP is a situation. It's a failure of the innate immunity in a serotic patient that basically allows bacteria to translocate, get into the bloodstream and ultimately seed the ascites. If the cell count shows more than 250 PMNs, neutrophils, that is the diagnosis of SVP. Inoculate yourself a blood culture vial right there beside it and send it off for culture. Those are the basics of fluid analysis of acidic fluid.
