"Oh foolish and senseless people, do you think you can charm love so that you might be able to manage it at your good pleasure? You may play with it, but it will sting and torment you cruelly," he writes. "As is said in Sirac, who will pity a snake-charmour bitten by a serpent?" He adds: "How blind are you gambling at such frivolous stakes with the principal power of our soul?"
