Many people don't realize time square was named after a company back in the late 18 eighties. The triangular area wedged between west forty seventh and forty fifth street was then called long acre square. In 19 39, thomas j bata decided to leave his home country and emigrate to canada. Bata purchased an old paper mill in the area, converted it into a manufacturing facility,. hired 82 check workers and began to rebuild his family shoe business. As the business grew, it needed to hire more workers, so bata built an even bigger factory a few kilometers away. Soon hotels, major restaurants, popular bars and theatres moved into time square.
