marchament Needham, a small pot-bellied man in his 20s with a sharp wit and a talent for friendship. He was the vigilante publisher of the Royalist newspaper, Macurious Pragmaticus. A generation before, newspapers had not even existed in Britain. Since they first appeared around 1620, their popularity and number had expanded dramatically. Now newspapers were in the hands of innkeepers and weavers, apothecaries and apprentices across the country.
