Are There Any Ways to Improve the Rate of Carbon Sequestration in Soil?

Are there possible approaches whereby we might alter the chemistry of what's going on to find ways, perhaps not on farmland, but on other lands, to sequester carbon much more efficiently in soil? Yes, there are a number of practices that folks are working on. There are efforts to enhance the rate of plant productivity and associated carbon seques ation by applying things like compost and even human waste. Are their research efforts trying to genetically modify plants to do a better job of absorbing carbon? This is another very active area of research.
