The Life and Times of Titus
In 79 AD Mount Vesuvius erupted burying the surrounding countryside in 60 feet of ash and volcanic rock. The resort town of Pompeii was utterly destroyed, but we should not forget that numerous Campanian cities perished at the same time. Titus however did not dwell on what a marvelous archaeological site had just been created,. He donated huge sums out of the imperial treasury to aid with first the cleanup and then the reconstruction of the devastated area.
