The History of Education

School texts that have survived for centuries, dating back to the earliest days of writing to the Sumerians, give us a good sense of what school would have been like. It's not interested in getting a large group of a society literate and in effect into the source of power that literacy brings with it. For a long, long time, that was really the purpose of school. There was a need for a trained doesn't sound dreadful, a trained bureaucracy. Someone needed to run the empire.
