Hackers targeted a weakness they found in the file sharing software Move it. A sequel injection is a pretty common attack vector now. Back in the days it was relatively freshly so pretty much everything it compromised through it. So an attacker would upload or post some sort of malicious payload. The application accepts the payload, it processes and evaluates the payload. And then depending on what that payload is, it will execute from there.
