"I remember what it was like having a first child. And I do think we have this idea, and we would never express it out loud or think it explicitly," she says. "It's like, if I just parent right, my kid will be perfect." As her kids get off school, maybe there's another reason parents give their younger children more freedom that doesn't actually have just to do with laziness.
