The Death of Artyzerxes
According to Thucydides, themistically died at Magnesia in 459 BC from natural causes. However, perhaps inevitably, there were also rumors surrounding his death, and so Plutarch provides an alternative ending to his life. He writes that when Egypt rose in revolt with Athenian aid, Artyzerxes ordered him to lead the fleet against his fellow Athenians. But he decided that he would rather end his life than fight his own countrymen, and so he committed suicide by drinking bull's blood.
