I think there's a narrative about the progress of black people in America since the period of slavery, overcoming civil rights. And it is an extraordinary and important story that all Americans ought to take an interest in. But you can do that without effacing your own ethnic identity. I think that it makes it actually more valuable and not less, it enhances it.
