The body formerly known as the third estate was now called the national assembly. The king's oldest son and the heir to the throne, suddenly died at the age of seven. A declaration that all existing taxes would henceforth be considered illegal until proved by the national assembly passed unanimously. Just a few weeks before, this would have been unthinkable.
