Lewis was referencing Dionysus I think when he was thinking about how to present these angels and he was toying with all sorts of different stuff. And then finally they take a form that looks more like what we would imagine to be angels, which is pretty good matches for what they conceived Mars and Venus actually look like in Greek mythology. They're in parallendra so I've only just started reading this book, but you can see very clearly that Lewis was referencing DionYSus. There's disagreement as to whether it was actually Saint Dionysus the area of the guy who wrote them.
