The Russians' Long Game in the Cold War
The Russians specialize in these type of deep cover spies called illegals, and they've done that for decades. This goes back more than 100 years to the early days of the Soviet Union when they couldn't have spies under diplomatic or legal cover. They sent people out as illegals and often posing as not being Russians as being other nationalities. It takes years of investment to train someone to create a new identity to steal someone else's identity. And there's evidence that they're still doing it today,. just in the last year or so, we've seen a number of illegals rounded up around Europe and around the world.
