When drafts of the poem were circulated, a lot of people questioned what were his sources for his symbolic understanding of the holy grail myth. In response, eliot actually added in a footnote to the poem where he explicitly cites a book by the scholar jesse l weston called from ritual to romance. He sort of credits her with providing this understanding of the real meaning of the grail legend. And i think that eliot's decision, that he felt he needed to cite this book by jesse l Weston, shows a number of things.
