The Intersubjective Paradigm in Psychoanalysis

psychoanalysis is based on the principle that self-experience, one's own identity, must be thought of primarily in terms of interpersonal relationships. We become that which we are through relationships and in relationships. Certain aspects of self come into resonance with the social situation or simply don't. To be stuck in an experience of the self has very adverse consequences - it means above all being stuck in certain relational patterns.
