Deserved in some sense, according to conventional wisdom and religious wisdom. And so we might say that the church's doctrine of proof by pleasure is actually rather honest. Our beliefs are translations of these things into ideological terms. That means there is a use for these errors which evolv rather than seeing cause and effect as obvious and universal.
