The Importance of Words in Language

I think there's a real danger, both within the academic discipline of philosophy, but more generally, that because of the failure of being able to provide a realist theory of language, that somehow everyone's got a bit exhausted with it. But I don't think we can ignore it because it is fundamental and what we do when we ignore it is we retreat to a sort of intuitive realism. And our sensation and our thought, our responses to the world, they're not descriptions of the world. If we see blue, there's not blue out there. We have held that stuff out there as blue. Our sense is the whole of our way of dealing with the world is by holding it
