According to our Tasmania, convicts were employed in the shipbuilding industry. Chain convicts had the task of cutting down human pine trees and rafting the logs down the river. Eventually, the heavily forested island was cleared by the convicts. Attempts to smuggle even the smallest morsel of food off Sarah Island was severely punished. James Robinson was sentenced to 100 lashes and six months in the chain gang for being caught with cooking fat in his possession.
