Are We Just an Irrational Species?
People who think of themselves and are widely thought of as very smart, can be and are frequently tripped up in this reasoning process. We did not evolve in a world that had mathematical formulas or reliable government data sets on safety on crime. And so we tend to go with our immediate experience. If we see something in the news, if the image sticks in memory, we think it's likely. So I think there's a role for education in teaching kids these formulas, these rules. They're extraordinary useful because it means you don't have to rely on your own autobiographical experience. You can learn from the accumulated wisdom of our entire civilization.
