The Importance of Breast Abscesses

Breast abscesses rarely resolved with antibiotics alone. Abscesses generally require drainage in conjunction with antibiotics. Needle aspiration using an 18 or 21 gauge needle with local anesthesia has taken a place of open IND although IND may still be required if multiple aspirations by needle are needed. If the initial abscess size is greater than 5 cm then that would preclude needle aspiration and that needs formal IND. For largeINDs packing can be done but drains typically aren't used much anymore though it's definitely left to the discretion of the breast surgeon.
