The Different Ways of Reading Black Life in the South
One way was to read black life in the south as a, perfectly normal and ok, black people are happy being slaves. The other is to emphasize how horrible slavery was and how much we wanted to be free. Those methods or ways of talking about black life continued even after the abolition of slavery.
