In 1899, the Postal Service shut down a chain letter factory in Toledo, Ohio. Con artists got around this by sending letters by hand and dropping them in mailboxes. These started to spread in the 80s and 90s when email became a thing. One of the first things that would spread through email were copies of this specific chain letter.
