The Importance of Equal Opportunity in Politics
It seems to me that there is a democratic feeling that anybody should in principle be allowed to stand as a representative. So I suppose another way of putting what you're saying is that your gender or your ethnic origins may actually be part of your qualifications for the job. The solution is not to say we insist on decision-making assemblies that are now 100% composed of women, but simply to move to a situation in which our political representatives just much more normally reflect the population they are representing.
