The tradition of throwing tennis balls at weddings started with a family member. He says this is payback for playing pranks on his other sisters' weddings. The rice used to be thrown, but there was an urban legend that would kill birds if they ate it. They changed it to bird seed in the 80s after Connecticut banned throwing rice at weddings.
