When Caesar comes back from spain, he's entitled to a triumph. The fact he doesn't take it is one of the most important moments in his entire career. In order to run for consul, caesar must appear in the forum on a particular date. He must also relinquish his military command. To cross the pomerium, the religious boundary of rome, while still a serving soldier will invalidate his application. Who does he want to be? The glorious returning general, or the influential politician?
