Where Did All the People Come From?
The population of Greece may have doubled in the 8th century BC, and all those people had to live somewhere. Sometimes a single village might expand and expand until it reached the point of becoming an important center. More often, however, multiple villages in an area grew together and fused into a single settlement. These shared areas might also have been refuges, fortified high points that several local villages used together in times of trouble.
