The Cost of Failure in a Community
A key variable is tension between the in group and the broader society. If there's a lot of tension, you get a high level of average commitment within the in group. In extremely low tension groups, failed prophecies should cause little or no disappointment. The Jehovah's Witness example really hurt the Witnesses because they had to give up a lot to be a part of that group.
