Are We Socially Constructed?
The decline of trade unions has contributed to a shift in how skill is defined. In the past, unions negotiated their male members being regarded as skilled. This protected entry to the occupation through a close shop. It left women in jobs without that protection. The idea that skills are socially constructed has been advanced by feminist researches.
