In the middle of all this, a jewish convert named antipode has been garnering political power. He's largely unknown to day outside certain nurty circles. But he's a really important figure because the romans trust him and elevate him in jerusalem politics. When antipader dies, it's one of his sons, herod, who ends up as the one that the romans really, really trust. This is herod the great, into whose er, late into their reign, jesus is born.
