Is There an Unconscious Mechanism That Wakes You Up?

There's no experience of thoughts and perceptions in deep sleep. But there is, i would suggest, that consciousness remains wide awake indeep sleep. Anyone who has been woken from deep sleep by an alarm clock has the evidence right there. Once the level of of sound or other disturbances goes above the threshold, it wakes you up. If you have a baby or a young dog, you become much more attentive to that.
