The idea that man's glory passes away unless a dark age follows it has been around forever. In painting, chimabue thought he held the field, and now it's jotto. The former only keeps a shadowed fame. So did one guido from the other rest the glory of our tongue? And he perhaps is born who will chase both out of the nest. Worldly renown is nothing more than a breath of wind that blows now here, now there. It changes name when it has changed its course. This is a amazing and subtle and sophisticated passage.
