Before we even knew how did we know the sun is a big fusion reaction. People thought it was made out of coal because it didn't make any sense. Coal doesn't contain that much energy, but people kind of knew that the sun had been around for a long time. One of the key players in this was a chap called Arthur Eddington who was a brilliant physicist and he had this suspicion that there was some kind of nuclear reaction going on there.
