The way to understand prehistory is that you're trying to create some sort of large coherent picture out of an almost infinite number of small internally contradictory pictures. That's true in the present day too, right? There are going to be aspects of their life that fit very neatly with those larger trends. And if that'strue in the present today, why wouldn't that be true in the past as well? No, that's absolutely right. We see societies which are relatively hierarchical, that collapse into relatively flat societies and then become hierarchical again.
