In 1838 they take a trip to New York, Spain thinking that the weather might help Chopin's health. By the end of the trip, Sand says that Chopin is coughing up basins of blood. She writes this novel about an aging actress who falls for a moody, sickly prince. Everyone in Paris who read this book knew that was Chopin and he was portrayed in a horrible light.
