There's a lot going on down in the colon. We studied the whole GI tract, because we're looking at things like bariatric surgery and encroned disease. Fermentation of fibers primarily take place in the colon almost exclusively. If it starts to occur in the small bowel, that can cause things like bloating and small bowel overgrowth and symptoms of IBS.
