How would you define all? What is that emotion? That's a hard question. Edmund Burke said, awe has power in it and obscurity. I translate those two ideas to the idea that awe is about our experience. It's an experience we have when we encounter vast mysteries. You are amazed at how a child learns language or trees versus beauty.

Dacher Keltner is a professor of psychology at University of California, Berkeley, who directs the Berkeley Social Interaction Lab. He is also the founder and faculty director of the Greater Good Science Center. His latest book, Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life, is out now.
