Taiwan has a large immunity from public opinion, which means they've got staying power for much longer than Western countries have. Despite the fact that they backed off with COVID in the end, that in place wasn't working. The whole thing about Taiwan is strategic ambiguity. You don't want the Chinese to know what the response is going to be because you want them to think it could go badly. Therefore, don't try it. That's the theory of deterrence.
