The Argument for the Existence of God
There's a special problem that needs to be dealt with. When you reason from effects to cause in the ordinary way, you arrive at a conclusion like this. There's a cause. And it's the sort of thing that could produce the effect that we started from. So how do you argue for an un-caused cause? You've probably guessed by now that Aquinas' argument doesn't go that way. They argue that when there are effects and causes, there must ultimately be an ultimate cause. This is how you arrive at the existence of God.
