CHAPTER

The History of the French Forage

The Marine Corps sustained more casualties on June 6th, 1918 than the entire service had sustained at that point. The French were so impressed with the Marines' performance that they awarded the 5th and 6th Marine regiments with what is called the French for the French. It's essentially a high military honor saying, Hey, the sacrifice that you gave is something that we as French will always remember and honor. And to this day, as we sit here on, you know, in May of 2023, the 5rd and 6thMarines still wear the French forage on their left shoulder.
