Cold Rain met Ravi Shankar a month before he recorded Impressions with his band Dolphy at the Village Vanguard in New York. Cold Rain said: "When I hear his music I want to copy it, not note the note of course but in his spirit" Downbeat magazine described those shows as musical nonsense and a horrifying demonstration of what appears to be an anti-jazz trend.
