Is There a Qualitative Other to Hopelessness?

I wonder if there's a way to level this critique from the perspective of utility that hopelessness in a society where pleasure seeking and utility maximization is endemic. Is there a sense in which there is also a sort of like bemoaning of expected utility? And so hopelessness under these determinant conditions manifests largely under a sort of utility rubric. But at the same time, there's another dimension that is folded into that that is not eliminated,. That is this qualitative other, right? Does that make sense?
