According to the Egyptian priest and historian Manetho, there were over 36,000 books written under the pseudonym of Hermes Trismegistus. The corpus was thought to have been lost to the west since late antiquity and the beginning of the dark ages. In the 15th century, Italian humanist scholars Marcellio Ficino and Ludovico La Chirelli played a key role in translating the corpus.
